October 2007 DC VMUG Recap
First off, many thanks to Kevin George a and the rest of the team from EqualLogic for stepping up to host the wonderful event. We had ~35 people turn out for the inaugural Washington, D.C. Metro Area VMware User Group (DC VMUG in layman’s terms).
On top of great shrimp and great service from the friendly staff at Sobe Seafood in Clarendon, we discussed:
- The initiation of the DC Metro VMUG. It’s been too long for such a predominant area to not have a VMUG.
- A LIVE demonstration by the EqualLogic team showcasing their iSCSI solution, in use with some of VMware VI3’s more advanced features. As a brief tangent, some of their unofficial iSCSI performance metrics beat my very official fiber channel metrics at my current customer site. Well done!
- Virtual Appliances and how their use is spreading (especially in primarily Linux-based environments).
- UNNOC. A free open-source monitoring solution ready for your customization.
- New from VMWorld 2007, with VMware’s own Matt Hart chiming in to give a very nice description of Site Recovery Manager, an eagerly awaited feature coming out sometime in ’08.
Most importantly, we discussed what we want out of the user group and some of the feedback I received was:
- An, “Introduction to Virtualization” segment, either before the main VMUG meeting or during.
- More technical content. Even more solutions, more “what I’m doing with VMWare” conversation.
I also had a few offers from VMUG members to speak at the next outing on topics ranging from security to consolidation. Please contact me!
Be sure to vote in the poll on when we should meet next, either December or January.
Here’s the presentation from last week’s meeting:

Finally, for those wishing to link contact information with fellow VMUG attendees, I’m suggesting we use LinkedIn. I’ve already sent a few invites out to those that I personally chatted with and traded email addresses. Here’s my profile, feel free to link to me.
